From Gartner PPM Summit 2010

Some sentences ‘picked-up’ during sessions of first day in the “Gartner PPM (Program and Portfolio Management) and IT Governance Summit 2010”, in London:

• Anyone can read the PMBOK. Not everyone can lead a project
• A project represents an investment of the organization to make a change
• Negative people have a problem for every solution
• We are going from triple inner restrictions in Project Management (Time, Cost and Scope) to five-restrictions: Time, Cost, Scope, Innovation and Sustainability
• Future Project Manager skill base: Technical Foundation + Leadership Skills + Strategy/Business Management
• Stakeholder is any group or individual that can affect, or is affected, by a particular work effort
• When you find yuorself in a hole, stop digging
• Only when you can ‘see’ value, are you able  to tell what is waste and then start to get rid of it
• Value is created in 3 ways: Product Development, Information Management and Physical transformation/service delivery
• The Lean ‘revelation’: if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem

Some recommedation, from Gartner analysts, in order to be prepared for a changing future, as a project/program/portfolio managers:

• Develop a strong knowledge of some aspects of the business
• Develop the skills necessary to deliver results
• Improve either:
• Your change management skills
• Your knowledge management skills
• Your contract management skills
• Your portfolio management skills
• Your program management skills
• How do you eat an elephant? One bit at a time
